Earlier this week the annual Grammy Awards were presented. I don’t think the event got all that much tv coverage here – the time difference was against it – so I have only picked up a few things from news reports. As these are about music (allegedly) they should be a set of awards that are of great interest to me, but most of these ceremonies rather pass me by. However, I have seen many clips over the years from such events, and this gave me an idea for a new post in my occasional series of Friday Funnies. It is more than three months since the last one, so I think it about time for another. For this one, I am going with a theme: awards ceremonies, featuring both presenters and recipients, and some of the things they have said.

This first clip is one of those lifetime achievement awards. It gets a little bit non-PC near the end, but given the age of the clip and the recipient that is, I think, understandable. He was a comedy legend here, and was a recipient  at the British National Comedy Awards in 1994:

So now you know: this country is reigned over by King Little Grovelling Bastard III!

This next one is also from a comedy legend, who sadly left us recently:

You never quite knew what you were going to get with him, apart from it probably including something inappropriate for a live broadcast.

This next one is another from our National Comedy Awards. The recipients are the crew from the tv show Taskmaster, which is co-presented by Greg Davies, who starts this one off, and Alex Horne, who finishes it:

If you’ve never seen the show you really should, if you get the chance – it is real laugh out loud funny stuff.

I’m closing today with a fine example of the opening monologue for an awards ceremony. This is from the BAFTAs again, in 2022, and is given by the presenter of the show, Richard Ayoade, who has a good line in deadpan humour:

That’s all for today. I hope I’ve given you something to brighten up a grey, dismal February day, which is what we are enduring here. Maybe it’s better where you are – especially if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere. In all honesty, the weather here is crap!

  6. Great clips Clive… and great comedians! I laughed at all of them but Spike’s comment got the biggest laugh. I had forgotten about that one. I remember the Ricky Gervais Golden Globe speeches. The best bits were when the camera panned to the celebrities’ squirming faces in the audience.

    • Thanks, Paul, I’m pleased you enjoyed them.

      I’m not a fan of Gervais, and some of his ‘jokes’ bordered on cruelty in my view. I did think about including him in the piece but couldn’t bring myself to watch any of them 🤣

  13. Dear old Barry. Years ago I hurriedly bought some tickets to what I thought was the Last Night of the Proms. I couldn’t believe my luck that I’d got some. It turned out to be Barry Humphries’ Last Night of the Poms’!
