My August

Welcome to the second of my restyled monthly reviews. Hopefully WordPress won’t attempt to sabotage this one like they did with the first: they left it out of the Reader! I’m not a great fan of the Reader but follow my own blog just to check that my posts are in it. A useful tip if you don’t already do that yourself. But I don’t then ‘like’ my own posts too – I leave that to you!

So, what did I treat you with last month? Well, I arrived in your inbox thirteen times, all bar one of which were music posts – old habits die hard! As usual, there were my two regulars, the first of which was

As I did last time, I’m playing you one of my favourite songs from those posts:

That was the excellent Elles Bailey, with Leave The Light On, which I played in episode 265. My apologies to Pete, who didn’t like the dancers, Antonia Latz and Lyndon J E Dasilva. I loved them and the video as a whole, and that’s my excuse for playing it again!

There were five Sundays last month, which meant five posts for my other regular – my contribution to

And as is my new way, I’m reprising one of the songs I played in those:

The Hound + The Fox with their beautiful version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, with all five verses! I”ll leave it to you to work out which post that was in (there’s a big clue in the title!).

That leave the four others, three of which were music pieces. The first of these was

People And Trains

in which I played some songs especially written for the 200th anniversary of the UK’s first public rail passenger service driven by steam engines. These are all very moving – hankies at the ready if you take another look!

Then came one of my occasional series, with

A Classic Album 6

That album was the eponymous debut by Crosby Stills & Nash, and it was well received – many of you agreed with me that it is indeed a classic.

The other music post was

Chart Music August 2025

not my snappiest or most imaginative title, but it did exactly what it said on the tin.

A favourite song from these would be this one:

Lewis Capaldi, of course, with Survive, his comeback song after a two year absence. I’m glad to see him back with us after his struggles.

And then there was the non-music post, which I wrote for John Holton’s Writer’s Workshop:

Courage

and it wouldn’t be me without a couple of tunes being dropped into it, would it? There were two, both of which I really like, but I’ve chosen this one for this review:

Fun. (their full stop, not mine) with Some Nights.

Last time I also played some songs by people who we had lost that month. Fortunately there don’t seem to have been as many departures during August, but we did lose Bobby Whitlock, a singer-songwriter who played keyboards and guitar, notably with Delaney and Bonnie, where he started out, and then in Derek and the Dominos, which he co-founded with Eric Clapton. He then went on to a long solo career. In his honour I’m playing the obvious one from his catalogue, which I think demonstrates well his keyboard skills:

R.I.P. Bobby.

And to close, how about one of my favourite August songs:

Noah Cyrus and P.J. Harding with Dear August, with Noah showing us why I think she is the most musically talented member of her family.

That was my August, then. I hope you enjoyed it with me and will revisit – September is already up and running!

        About the blog recommendations, go to Beetley Pete’s post on the subject. A blogger named “John” has written a complete explanation about how it works in a comment there. (Bottom line: it exposes your blog to more people in the WordPress Reader.)

        I’ve seen that post too – I follow Pete’s blog – but didn’t have much luck when I followed the suggestions! I’ll keep trying 😊

    • Thank you, Carol. That’s a nice comment, but I don’t think lovers of disco, funk, rap or punk would find much here to their liking! Or classical, which I really should do something about. I’m pleased you enjoyed my month, though xx
