A regular reader – there must be one somewhere! – will know that I very rarely reblog someone else’s post, and that there has to be a special reason for me to do so. There are two reasons for this one. Firstly, Gem is a very good ‘virtual’ friend who has been supportive of my blog, and I like to show my support for hers too. Secondly, this is a subject that I considered as one of my ‘Dates To Note’ but I have been trying to reduce the frequency of these, and this lost a very difficult decision to my main theme of mental health. Anyone who – like me – has ever seen the pain and struggle that breast cancer can cause will know how important it is to raise awareness, in the hope that wherever possible tests are taken early, for best effect. I saw a good friend at work suffer this for three years until it finally took her life – still in her thirties, leaving two young children.
So thank you Gem for raising awareness of such an important cause.

Breast cancer is the top cancer in women both in the developed and the developing world. The incidence of breast cancer is increasing in the developing world due to increase life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles. Although some risk reduction might be achieved with prevention, these strategies cannot eliminate the majority of breast cancers that develop in low- and middle-income countries where breast cancer is diagnosed in very late stages. Therefore, early detection in order to improve breast cancer outcome and survival remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. (World Health Organization)
