For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday Jim has invited us to play some music from 2020 or later. You can read about it in his post, Not Old Enough To Grow Hair. I thought about playing one of the artists I’ve been following for years, who happen to have released new music recently, but I’ve chosen to go with someone whose first record came out just six years ago. I think she is fantastic, though I’d lay odds that no one reading this will know her, unless they remember the two previous occasions on which I’ve shared one of her songs. Just get a load of this voice:
Lyrics for her songs aren’t widely available, and this is one of the few for which I could find some. They run:
Running on empty
Ploughing desolate lands
Well ran dry
Still we drown in the silence
While the blood runs from your hands
Poets and preachers
Left in the cold
Ain’t no margin in feeding a family
From the farming of your soul
So sing yourself to sleep
Turn turn turn
World keeps a turning
Deal us scraps
From your silver spoon
Burn Burn Burn
Songs on the Fire
Carried on the smoke
To the Cheats and the Liars
Turn turn turn
World keeps a turning
Revolution
Coming through
Burn Burn Burn
Warmed by the pyre
Sing another song
For the Cheats and the Liars
Songwriters: Elles Bailey, Ashton Tucker
Copyright: Outlaw Music
Having played that for you, I think I should give Elles Bailey a proper introduction, with some background information. Elles (short for Eleanor) is from Bristol in the UK, and has a notable back story. At the age of 2 she was hospitalised with a severe case of viral pneumonia and spent seventeen days – including her third birthday – with a breathing tube down her throat. Happily she survived that ordeal mostly unscathed, but she has credited, if that is the right word, her singing voice to that experience: “I know how fortunate I am to have walked away with that husky voice. And my life.” She has won several awards here for her music, and has to date released five albums. She tours extensively and is, I think, one of the hardest working performers around. I follow her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and she is one of those artists who really enjoys the interaction with fans that these give her. I’ve not met her, but I know someone who has: apparently she is a lovely person, very welcoming and friendly. This song is the opening track on her most recent album, Shining In The Half Light, which was originally released in February 2022 but was given the Deluxe treatment, with an additional nine tracks, in March of this year. It reached #42 in the UK Albums Chart, peaked at #1 in the UK Jazz and Blues Albums Chart, at #2 in the UK Americana Albums Chart and at #4 in the UK Independent Albums Chart.
I thought I’d play you a second song by Elles. This is one of the additional tracks that was added to that album in March, and I think it is equally good. This was co-written with Matt Owens, from the UK indie band Noah and the Whale, and gives you another chance to hear those great vocals of hers, and this time you get to see her fabulous band and sassy backing vocalists too:
I’ve become a big fan of Elles since I first heard her music some years back, and I hope these two songs will show you why. If you like these, do check her out further: everything she has done is superb.
That’s it for today. I’m off to see what others are playing for their relatively new music choices: it should be interesting. See you again for Tuesday Tunes 😊🎶

Thanks for the intro to this new artist! Great Nashville sound, and what a voice!

There’s quite a Nashville influence on her music – her first two albums were recorded there – though she’s British. Her voice is pretty special, isn’t it!

They both have a soulful quality to their voices, and can power out a song!

I had listened to the second track here but it was the first time I had heard the first track what a fabulous voice Elles has xx

I like learning about some of your more current choices because quite naturally you tend to choose material from back in time.
Hole in My Pocket has a bluesy, country feel to it. I can’t think of too many other songs that fit that profile. These are both tunes I’d listen to again.
By the way, my wife and I are going to be attending a country show early in July. It’s a band named Parmalee, a group I know nothing about. I’ve decided I don’t always want to be on the outs when my son and wife are discussing their favorite groups/songs.

I do tend towards older music but there is still plenty of good new music around – as long as you mostly steer clear of the charts. If you enjoyed these Elles has plenty more you’d enjoy. I think she’s fantastic.
From what I know about Parmalee, which isn’t much, they have a slightly heavier sound than most country bands so I think you’ll enjoy them. I’m looking forward to your blog post on the show 😉

Her voice has its own quality and suits her material.

It does indeed, and she is building a library of great songs that suit her. Plus the occasional cover: her version of Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off turns it into a whole new song.

Just looked it up. Not familiar with the song anyway. but love this!

Thank you, Clive, for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it, and that what I’ve been told about Elles is right! I can’t get to gigs any more, so I’ll never have the pleasure of meeting her, but I’m glad I enjoy the music of someone who is so nice!

I love those lyrics, “Burn Burn Burn Songs on the Fire”. The first song sounded very country to me and I the second one sounded more like the Blues with a touch of Gospel and at the end it turned into a rock song. I think it is great that she can cross genres like this, Thanks for sharing your music, Clive and for introducing me to Elles Bailey.

She has won awards here for blues and Americana, and as you say is very versatile. Happy to have made the introduction, Jim.

Great voice, sounds American which is clearly where he influences lie. Thanks for bringing her to her attention – maybe you should send a link to the blog to her Facebook page? If you’re on FB of course..

She has recorded in the States, and is playing in Nashville later in the summer. I think she should go well there. I’ve just joined her Facebook fan group and linked to this post there: but I think everyone there already knows how good she is!

I would call her voice “full bodied”. Thanks for the introduction.

She is an awesome singer. What I like about your posts, Clive is that you have eclectic taste in music and don’t discount new musicians. Sure, there are some types of music you don’t like, but don’t we all. A great choice today.

Thank you, Darlene, I’m glad you like her too. Thank you for your kind words: whilst my tastes tend to veer back to my formative years there is a lot of good music being made today, though most of the chart stuff passes me by!

I’m pleased you like her, Miriam. That latest album is a good starting point, and if you find her first album, Wildfire, she does an amazing slow bluesy version of Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off 😊
