As he tells us in his post This Job I Got, Jim has chosen ‘song that mentions a profession’ as today’s Song Lyric Sunday theme, at the suggestion of Di, whose blog at pensitivity101 is well worth a visit or several. My chosen profession may feel more like a calling, but as my stepmum is an ordained minister in the Church of England I’m keeping it in the family by choosing any combination you like of vicar/minister/preacher as my ‘profession.’ It is Sunday, after all! I’m playing you three songs today, which are very varied in nature and take rather different approaches to the theme.
This is my lead song, which has provided me with today’s title:
And the lyrics:
The Strawbs began life in 1964 as The Strawberry Hill Boys, named after the area of London where the founder members were in teacher training college. Grave New World, was their fourth album, released in February 1972 after Rick Wakeman had left the band to join Yes, of whom you might have heard – that’s more likely than your knowing The Strawbs, to be honest! Benedictus was the only single released from it, but it didn’t make the charts. They were more of an albums band at that time, which was reflected in its chart placings of #11 in the UK, #49 in Australia and even #191 in the US. After Rick Wakeman’s departure, band leader Dave Cousins consulted the I Ching asking what to do next. The answer from the coins, “Humble must he constant be, where the paths of wisdom lead, distant is the shadow of the setting sun”, forms part of the first two lines of the song, and probably does wonders for my credibility as a serious purveyor of meaningful songs . Or not.
That’s it for today. As I said, they are a mixed bunch, but I hope you have enjoyed somewhere between one and three of them. Enjoy the rest of your day, and I’ll see you again for Tuesday Tunes – correctly numbered, this time!

Hi Clive, my grandfather was also an ordained minister for the Church of England. My mother thinks I’ve inherited a lot of his characteristics and that is why I have my ‘collection’ of people I help. I’ve always had a collection, since I was a young girl.

That’s, lovely, Robbie. I think certain people are cut out to do good things for others, and it sounds as if you are one 😊

It does come naturally, I think.

Good choices especially the one by Dusty Springfield. Such a wonderful voice. The second was a new one for me, but I really liked it – that video – haha
And the third just has a wonderful sound and message. 🙂

Thank you, I’m pleased you enjoyed them all. Dusty’s voice was wonderful, wasn’t it. The Hooters were a fun band, and they made some great videos as well as enjoyable music. The Strawbs were a favourite band of mine, so I’m glad you liked this one – a lovely tune and a message that was a good fit for my ‘profession.’

Dusty was one of the greatest singers of our generation. Her life from an early age was one of extreme turmoil and unhappiness. She was and will always be a goddess to me.

She lived in a time where being gay was likely to hurt a musician’s career, which is where that turmoil came from. I always thought she was fantastic 😊

Very true, Clive. However, she also was bipolar and a drug and alcohol abuser, living a frenetic life of extreme euphoria and raging knock-down drag-out fights. I remember reading that toward the end of her life, she lamented that no one remembered her, that the nurses in the hospital had no idea who she was. A friend brought a video to the hospital; the nurses circled ’round her bed watching the video, in awe of Dusty. It’s nice to believe her last few memories were happy ones.

I hadn’t heard that story but, yes it was good that she took some happy memories with her.

Okay … finally able to visit and what do I pick??? One where you play songs with a religious bent! 🫣 Still … I like the Dusty Springfield one just fine, though I prefer some of her others, like the one you mentioned, “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”. I knew the one by the Hooters from a previous post of yours, I believe … as soon as the video began, I remembered it. Remembering is not necessarily fondly, but I do like that video … just not crazy about the song … too loud for me. And the third one … the less said, the better 🤐. Nonetheless, I had fun visiting and listening to the tunes, so thank you, my friend!

If it’s any consolation I doubt you’d have enjoyed my previous post any more! Thank you for visiting, and proving again that we don’t all like the same music 🤣

And that is a good thing … it’s why there is so much variety, so many different genres … never boring!

Can’t ever go wrong with Dusty, didn’t realise the Strawbs had been around for so long, and God help us from the pestilence of those poor bankrupt souls, the televangelists.

You can’t, can you.
They go right back to my youth.
I think they deserved that takedown 😊

Dusty had a great voice. I think my favourite of hers is ‘I Just Don’t Know What to do With Myself’.

Hi Clive,
thanks for your kind words. Good tracks, Loved Dusty and Hubby liked the Strawbs. The Hooters is a new one on me. Video was a bit scary when it started but then it all clicked. Fun.

You’re welcome, Di. Glad you liked the songs. That Hooters video is one of the best I’ve ever seen, even 37 years on. It’s a lot of fun, isn’t it 😊

Dusty Springfield has a lot of charisma and I think everyone loves her. The Hooters are new to me, but I like this sound, but they sort of ripped this off from Hush, Little Baby. I have heard of The Strawbs, but I don’t really know their music. That is pretty cool that you are a minister, Clive.

It certainly seems that way, judging from the comments. I can see a bit of similarity on Satellite but I don’t think it’s a direct copy: there have been many more blatant examples of that! The Strawbs were quite English in their style, so I’m not surprised you don’t know their music. They actually played their final gig last summer at the annual Cropredy Festival, which is run by Fairport Convention, one of the great English folk-rock bands. Staying power!
I think you misread me. It’s my stepmum who is the minister, not me. I’m just your regular everyday heathen!

Yes indeed to all you said, I love Sandy Denny’s voice so pure. Great choices… Your school day claims to fame are pretty cool also 😎

Three great choices Clive…I love Dusty , I went to the same school as her not at the same time though two of older sister when at the same time as Mary O’Brien with her red hair and freckles. …My eldest sister remembers her well.
Love the Strawbs I always found them very folksy.
The Hooter great too and that video is brilliant, epic 💜💜

Thanks, Willow. Thats a good connection to have – I can only claim the Clash drummer and a guy who played sax for Tina Turner from my schooldays! Dusty was fantastic and I loved her.
The Strawbs started as a folk band, then went through pop and prog rock phases. I always liked them, right back to when Sandy Denny was with them before she joined Fairport Convention.
That Hooters video is superb, isn’t it. Good song too 😊

Back in the day I played Dusty’s records to death…I loved her. The hooters video is great, such fun a new song for me but very catchy and I like it …The Strawbs I know but not this track you are correct about a mixed bunch but all enjoyable, Clive xx

Many of us did, especially teenage boys like me, even when we found out she was gay!
The Hooters largely went under the radar here but I loved them. Their videos are all good, this one particularly so.
If people do know The Strawbs it would probably be from Part Of The Union or Lay Down. This was on their preceding album, before they had their hit singles. Glad you enjoyed them xx
