Tuesday Tunes 221: You

I was listening to a song the other day with the title You, and it struck me that this would be a good theme for these posts. I’m not exactly hard pressed for choices, am I! I have an ever growing list of songs that I could play so for the next couple of weeks I’m giving you a selection of tunes with You in their title. Some are more heartfelt than others, but I like them all and that’s what counts for me.

I like to start with something rousing if I can, and this one fits the bill. But I don’t think this counts as an outpouring of undying love:

I would rate AC/DC as one of my favourite harder rock bands: I love them and have all of their records. There are other videos available for You Shook Me All Night Long but I think this one is great, as it captures all of the excitement from one of their live shows. AC/DC released the Back In Black album, which features this track, in July 1980: their first record with Brian Johnson as vocalist after the death of Bon Scott in February 1980. It was a huge success, topping the charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, France and Switzerland, and peaking at #4 in the US, where it went double diamond (25 times platinum) for sales. It is one of the biggest selling albums of all time, and has to date shifted more than 50m copies. This song did have the ultimate accolade, though: it was for many years my ringtone, which always made life in the office interesting if my mobile rang while I was away from my desk – no one knew whether to answer it or start head banging! This version is a later live performance, which is from their Live At River Plate DVD, released in 2012: I have that DVD and it is a great performance – it must be a wonderful feeling being on stage with that sea of seething humanity rocking out with you. The DVD comprises extracts from three live shows the band played in December 2009 (spot some continuity errors!); the stadium is listed as having a 60,000 capacity but local estimates at the time put the combined attendance at nearer 200,000.

I first played this next one four years ago, so I think a reprise is in order. As I said then, I found it by accident on YouTube. I’d clicked a link to another song and this one came up as an advert – unusually for an ad they gave us the whole song. It was so good that, by the time it was over, I’d forgotten what I’d been planning to listen to. See what I mean:

Carolina Story comprises a married couple, Ben and Emily Roberts. He’s playing acoustic and harmonica in the video, the other guys are their seemingly anonymous band. They were a little hard to track down, as they don’t have a Wikipedia entry, but fortunately their own website has been updated since I first played this.  See You When I See You was the lead (but not title) track on their second album, Dandelion, which was released in September 2020. They have been together since meeting at college in 2007, and have been touring, writing songs and releasing albums since 2009. The band name derives from their being on tour in Carolina at the time they realised theirs was more than a professional relationship – isn’t that sweet? Their first album, Lay Your Head Down, was released in 2018, and their third, Colors Of My Mind, came out in April 2023 – all equally lovely records. That last one was the occasion for an updating of their website, as it now gives more information about them. It was produced by Paul Moak, who also played guitar and piano on it, and featured their longtime live band (guitarist/pedal-steel player Sam Wilson, bassist Randle Scruggs, drummer Nathan Sexton), who I guess may well have been in this video. it’s a great song, and I love Emily’s voice.

From the underrated and not well known to a much bigger star next. I’ve said before how much I like Lewis Capaldi and his music, so this one was a cert to be included:

Lewis Capaldi released Someone You Loved as a single in November 2018. It went to #1 in both the UK and the US and has some phenomenal sales figures: Diamond status in the US for 10m, 9x Platinum in the UK for 5.4m, and mega sales around the rest of the world, such as 1.4m in Brazil, 1.6m in Canada (also #1 there), and 1m in Germany. It was then included on his debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which came out in May 2019 and also made #1 in the UK, though only #20 in the US. It has sold more than 1.5m in the UK, going 5x Platinum, and more than 10m copies worldwide. As I’ve said before, I think he is incredible.

This next tune is another absolute beauty:

You was a track on Bonnie Raitt’s twelfth album, Longing In Their Hearts, which was released in March 1994, making #1 in the US, where it sold more than a million copies (2x Platinum), and #26 in the UK. It was later released as a single, peaking at #92 in the US and #31 in the UK, though it fared best in Canada, where it reached #16. I bought the album back then, and fell in love with this track in particular: it is such a beautiful performance. And by the way, this wasn’t the song that prompted this theme: that one is coming next week!

Having had a run of slower tunes I thought I’d close this first instalment of You songs with something a little faster paced. There have been three ‘official’ videos for this one, of which this is the first:

Run To You is a track from Bryan Adams’ fourth album, Reckless, released in November 1984. This was the one that gave him his big breakthrough, getting to #1 in both the US and his Canadian homeland, and #7 in the UK. This was released in October 1984 as the lead single for the album, and did its job well, reaching #6 in the US, #11 in the UK and #4 in Canada. The album is fantastic, and includes songs like Heaven, Somebody, Summer Of ’69, and the brilliant duet with Tina Turner, It’s Only Love. Another album I bought at the time and played to bits!

    • Thank you, Keith. I try to mix these up a bit, aiming at something for everyone, and hopefully more than that for many. Those are three good tracks, but if I’m honest the other two are my favourites from this set. As I say, something for all tastes 😊

      • I’m pleased you liked them. I didn’t expect anyone to know the Carolina Story one, which is why I played it. Several have said how much they like it but no one has yet said that they already knew it. Mission accomplished’

  6. You won’t likely be surprised to hear that these were all new to me! Thank you for once again expanding my music knowledge! You also won’t be surprised to know that I only managed about one minute of AC/DC … and even that was painful! But wow … I LOVE the Lewis Capaldi one — both the song and the video! Such heartfelt sadness that I almost felt tears threatening. Thanks again, Clive! ♫

  7. Quite a bit of diversity today, Clive. Like you, I’m a big Lewis Capaldi fan. What, if anything, is new with him regarding his health? I read somewhere that besides anxiety and Tourette’s he struggles with imposter syndrome. I think it’s a misconception on our part that we assume someone who has hit it big would neever wrestle with the latter.

    I also predictably like AC/DC and Bryan Adams. You know my tastes by now.

    • Thanks, Pete, I was aiming for a mix of styles and I’m glad you liked it. Yes, no surprise on your top two!

      Lewis talked about that in the documentary he made, called How I’m Feeling Now after one of his songs. I don’t think it is a major factor, though. That is an interesting watch if you haven’t already seen it: it was on Disney+ here, I think.
