Three days in a row? This could become habit-forming! I wasn’t planning on posting today but I received an email just now that brought this on. As anyone who has seen my posts will know I’m a huge fan of the music of Mary Chapin Carpenter: it is all of two days since I last played something by her! I’m on her email list, and this is what I received:
“Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie Fowlis, and Karine Polwart have announced the release of their new album Looking For The Thread on January 24; an exciting debut collaboration from the three artists. The first single Hold Everything is out now. Penned by Karine Polwart, the song gives a nod to the world, as it is, and to John Berger’s beautiful and devastating 2008 book Hold Everything Dear: Dispatches on Survival and Resistance.
No-one quite knew what to expect when Mary Chapin sought a collaboration with two of the most adventurous and versatile artists in Scottish music, Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart – least of all the trio themselves. The results, it transpires, rank among the career highlights of all three. Conceived in the remote west of Scotland and recorded in Spring 2024 at the renowned Real World studios, Looking For The Thread is a rich, resonant and unique record, one which supports and illuminates the core characteristics of each artist while bringing a powerful collective identity to the fore.”
There was only one thing I could possibly do after that: find that newly released single! I did, and it is absolutely beautiful. The vocals are mainly shared by Karine and Julie – their Scottish accents give them away – but just because MCC doesn’t feature much doesn’t mean I don’t like it any less. If you have seen the Transatlantic Sessions on TV you’ll have seen both of the Scots at some point and will know how good they are: I’m happy to say that their music resides in my Apple Music library.
Here is that first song from the album:
Such a beautiful song, and the lyrics offer a kind of companion to my post yesterday about World Children’s Day. If the remaining nine tracks are anything like that I think we are in for a treat. I know I shouldn’t wish my life away but I can’t wait for 24th January: I’m beyond excited 🤩

I love her., so good, Clive❤️

Thank you, Cindy, I’m pleased you liked it. MCC is a special talent, and if you didn’t know Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart before this they are also excellent.

Marvelous song. I can see why you like it so much. I wonder if you’ve posted music by Mary Chapin Carpenter more than any other artist. You’re the kind of guy who keeps track of that. 😊

Thank you, Pete, I agree! It’s a lovely song, isn’t it, and bodes well for the album.
Interesting thought about the music. I keep lists of what I play for my Advent posts, Tuesday Tunes and Song Lyric Sunday, but not for any others. I do that so that if I’m repeating myself at least I’ll know! The only real clue is in the word cloud on my site, which shows Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne and MCC in the same sized lettering, but the biggest one is The Beatles. But as I’ve played MCC twice this week I guess she’s a favourite too 🤣

That was stunning, Clive! Lovely blend of sweet voices and there’s no mistaking MCC’s effortless guitar. Delightful new find; thanks much for the sneak peek! 😊

I’m pleased you enjoyed it. I’m really looking forward to the album – if it is only half as good as that one it will be well worth hearing 😊

Thanks, Di, I’m pleased you like it. But you’ll have to enlighten me on Trinity, I’m afraid!

I couldn’t tell you much about them to be honest. I had an album of theirs and the harmonies were lovely. I found this with a different spelling and I think it’s them.

That certainly reads as though they are who you mean. Only released one album but came from the same background as Enya and Clannad, both of whom I like, so I’ll be looking this bunch up. Thanks for the tip 😊

True! They are touring the album here early in the New Year. Given her politics I wonder if MCC will go back there afterwards!

Rightfully there should be an exodus of good people leaving America, but where is there to go? Imagine the mess Trump will make when he tries to deport over 1 million people, the world xxnnot survive such a diaspira. For 200,000,000 million to try to leave America would need a whole hew country to go to. It would be a logistical nightmare.
The question is, will any Ametican who is abroad right now ever want to go back? I would not!

It remains to be seen what the fall out will be, either at his hands or by their own choice. It won’t be good, I’m sure of that.

Two months minus a day to get out. Sounds like a jail sentence in Canada.
