From The Graveyard

I wasn’t planning on posting again until Sunday, but then WordPress kindly reminded me of a piece I wrote nine years ago today. Sadly, it still feels relevant, perhaps even more so, and it isn’t often that I go on a little rant so I thought you might like to see one. And it is worth sharing again for the genius of the late Kenny Everett. From 2 October 2017, this was

BOMB THE BASTARDS?

On the day when the US Secretary of State says that attempts are being made to hold talks with North Korea, Numpty Trumpty tells him – via Twitter, of course – not to waste his breath trying to negotiate peace for the world’s sake. Presumably Tillerson will be the latest through the revolving door if he doesn’t do what he’s told. This could be his replacement

I despair. How can this idiot be the leader of the country that likes to think of itself as the major power in the free world? How can someone so manifestly unsuited to be a political leader blag his way into such a powerful position? What kind of electoral system allows someone who received 3 million fewer votes than his opponent to ‘win’ an election and impose his stupidity not only on his own country but on the rest of the world? Does he not realise that two lunatics leading their countries into a fight with nuclear weapons could result in the world being destroyed? Does he even care?

Am I being overly melodramatic? Maybe, but if the US President’s only approach to international diplomacy is to go to war, WW3 could be closer than we think. I hope that diplomacy can re-establish some sense of balance, but as Numpty has surrounded himself with a mixture of pugilistic cretins and sycophantic cowards, that may be a forlorn hope. He may not believe in climate change, but I’d appreciate it if he would give the world the opportunity to find out if he is right. Mutually assured destruction isn’t an attractive long term proposition, is it?

Sorry for the rant, but I needed to vent my fear and anger at what that idiot is doing! A couple of recent cartoons sum up for me what these two supposed leaders are up to:

Hopefully common sense will prevail, both in Washington and Pyongyang, but reading today’s news is a depressing prospect. I’m not by any stretch of the imagination a political blogger, as you can no doubt tell, but I’m a citizen of the world who is really worried about what is happening around us. Of course I know that political leaders often say things they either don’t mean, or which will never become reality, and I very much hope that this is what is happening here. I would hope and expect that, behind the public sabre rattling, diplomatic attempts are being made to defuse a potentially ruinous situation. Should I be holding my breath for a diplomatic solution? If not, well, it’s been a pleasure knowing you.

  1. Living in the heart of Midwest America, I can tell you that – even if Dems sweep in November and sweep out this grotesque manchild, which is doubtful – the problems will remain. Our electoral system is flawed, our only two parties have too much money and power, and too many Americans wallow in ignorance and indifference. The country’s entire value system (character, honesty, integrity, compassion, knowledge/education) has been smothered by base ideology. Sadly, Trump and his Republican sycophants are us. Here’s hoping the EU and others can do what America can’t.

    • That’s very much the impression I get from here, too. The problems are deeply ingrained and it would take a seismic shift to correct them, more than just the blunting of Trump’s power could do. We can but hope, but breath isn’t being held.

  2. It’s so striking—and disheartening—how a post written nine years ago can feel so spot-on today! The Kenny Everett clip really drives home how surreal international politics can get when real diplomacy takes a backseat. I loved reading your exchange with obbverse and RasmaSandra about ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ and ‘Eve Of Destruction’—those song titles fit the mood perfectly. As Keith noted with that ‘dotard’ throwback, it really does feel like history looping back on itself!

  3. Clive, we should not forget that Kim called Trump a “dotard” in Trump’s first term. We all had to look it up:

”A dotard is an old person who is weak, confused, or showing a decline in mental faculties due to old age.”

This description applies even more in his second term.

  4. I wish i could accuse you of melodrama and laugh it off. But zi don’t think Trump considers what future he’d leave for his grandchildren after blowing the world up. Or doesn’t care. I think he wants WW111 to prove himself a wartime leader like churchill. He’s more Loony Tunes thsn reality.

I don’t know how S.Korea could get rid of their idiot but it’s tome the rest of them were deposed.

  5. The problem with dicatators, whether Caligula, Hitler, Stalin, Trump, or Kim Jong Un, is that they are always unpredictable and capricious. They also tend to be spiteful, childish, and enabled by the sycophants that surround them. So there is no telling what they might do, unfortunately. Trying to second guess their actions is impossible.

    Best wishes, Pete.
